January Birthstone: Garnet

Garnets come in a variety of colors but are best known for their deep red shade. January's birthstone is associated with faithfulness, sincerity, truth, and grace, and those born in this month are said to be loyal, devoted friends.

History of Birthstones

Chances are you can name your birthstone, but have you ever wondered how certain stones came to be associated with particular months? Most gem scholars trace the tradition to the Old Testament story of Aaron, whose breastplate was decorated with twelve precious stones, one for each of the twelve tribes of Israel. Over time, these stones were linked with certain powers and tied to particular astrological signs, and later to calendar months.

There are many variations of birthstone lists, including Mystical birthstones, which originate from Tibet and date back over a thousand years, and Ayurvedic birthstones, associated with ancient Indian medicine and beliefs. Birthstones have also been tied to ancient Pagan religions, and even to the collective wisdom of the legendary lost city of Atlantis.

The Modern birthstone list, perhaps the most universally known, was released by the American National Association of Jewelers and officially adopted in 1912. Whether you embrace birthstone lore, or look upon it with a skeptical eye, there is an undeniable appeal to collecting a beautiful gemstone that is reputed to hold special power, meaning, and good fortune just for you.

5simply beautiful  Jan 17, 2008
By J. Jato "biz n book hound"
Bought this ring on a whim needed to get a holiday gift for myself. I know, pathetic. When I got it I was impressed. It was quite lovely and fit like a glove. I love garnet because of it's rich color and it looked exactly like the picture.

4Very nice stones, flattering setting, likely mass produced  Nov 27, 2008
By cinephiliagal
I bought this ring in a size 8. It fits on the ring finger of either of my hands.*

This is a VERY pretty ring. I've only been wearing it off & on for two weeks, and I've already gotten compliments. The garnets are a beautiful blood red. The setting allows light to enter the stones from the sides and bottom of the ring, which brightens the stones to that rich, dark red, and also increases their clarity.

I have previously owned garnet rings with bezel or prong settings that did not allow light through from beneath or from the sides. In such settings, garnets can look almost black, depending on the garnet quality, clarity, and color. This is disappointing, to say the least.

But the setting of this ring avoids that. It flatters both the color and clarity of these garnets.

I also like the size of the stones and their symmetry. The stones in this ring are a bit larger than the stones in the Marvelous Amethyst Gemstone Band .925 Sterling Silver Ring, which I also bought.

The sterling silver is very shiny (perhaps too shiny, if you prefer a bit of patina or an antiqued look). Stamped on the inside of the band is "925" and "CHINA," indicating where the ring was mass produced.

Note: although the product description states the stones are garnets, nothing about the origins of the stones is certain.

"Genuine" and "natural" mean two different things in mass produced jewelry, which this ring certainly is.

The description of this ring simply states that the metal is sterling silver and the stones are garnets. Given the price, implicit in this statement is the likelihood that these are "lab-created" or "synthetic" garnets and that the ring was mass-produced. I certainly did not delude myself into thinking these garnets were natural from a garnet mine.

But don't worry. Unless your friends or family are gemologists with dichroscopes, refractoscopes, spectrascopes, and/or polariscopes to examine the stones and determine their laboratory origins, no one will be able to tell whether these are "natural" or "lab-created" garnets.

And unless you, yourself, are a gemologist, who cares? You want this ring because it's pretty. And it IS pretty, whether the garnets are man-made or natural.

One bonus of this ring's mass-produced origins is that if you ever need to take it to a jeweler for repair, they won't bother switching the stones, because these aren't worth switching -- as opposed to the natural, mined gemstones often found in fine heirloom, estate sale, or consignment sale jewelry.

I would definitely buy this ring again if I ever lose the one I bought. I would also buy this as a gift for jewelry inclined friends/family.

*If I eat salty movie popcorn or tortilla chips & salsa, my fingers swell the next day or two. I have large hands and fingers, for a woman...add salty foods, and only mens' rings fit my fingers for about 24 hours after eating them.

53-stone garnet ring (sterling silver)  Jan 31, 2009
By Red Mom 2
First, let me say that ordering this ring was my first experience ordering anything from Amazon. I received a gift card for Amazon as a gift and I was so amazed at how easy it was to order something this beautiful online! My birthstone is garnet and I have always wanted a garnet ring that had "presence". There were SO many rings that fit my description, it was hard to choose just one...so I purchased TWO! I have to say, I was first amazed at how beautiful the rings I chose were pictured online, but when I actually received them a couple of days later...I was even more amazed! They arrived exactly when Amazon told me they would and they arrived well packaged and very protected. Truly, the rings I received superceded my expectations! I have received many complements on them as well. I've shared my story with all of my friends and encouraged them to check out Amazon too. I would DEFINATELY order again from Amazon!!

3Hmmmmmmmm.... Not quite sure......  Nov 21, 2010
By Jennifer
I ordered this ring because I wanted a Garnet stone and it had good ratings. When I received it I thought, "Ok, for the price, it's ok.... hmmmmmm... I wonder if it is real?" Upon further inspection, I noticed a tiny little scratch. Then I noticed a tiny little bubble. A stone should not have a scratch nor bubble! Then I realized I needed to return the ring. Yes, the price was right, but you get what you pay. I returned the ring with no issues.

5Better than the picture  Dec 04, 2008
By B. Applegate
This ring is quite beautiful and I believe the picture doesn't do it justice. It is a darker red but still takes up light well and the color is bright. It has a nice, sturdy feel, but not clunky...it sits nice on my finger.
